Retaking an NCEES Exam
If you need to retake an NCEES exam, you do not need to submit a Re-Exam Application to the Board or notify the Board that you need to retake the NCEES exam. You must register with NCEES to retake the exam in accordance with NCEES registration policies. To register with NCEES, log in to your MyNCEES account.
Retaking the State-Specific Civil Engineer Exams or the State-Specific Professional Land Surveyor Exam
If you need to retake the state-specific Civil Engineer exams or the state-specific Professional Land Surveyor exam, you must use the online BPELSG Connect portal to submit a Re-Exam Request and pay the exam fee(s) prior to being authorized by the Board to schedule to retake the exam(s).
First Re-Exam Request in Connect
The first time you submit a Re-Exam Request in Connect, you will use the “Re-Exam Request” button on your user dashboard to start the process. In order to successfully submit the request, you must enter your correct Board applicant/candidate ID number (this is a Board specific number; not your NCEES ID number). Please refer to prior correspondence from the Board before calling the Board to obtain the ID number. The ID number can be found on your prior exam results and is typically five (5) to six (6) digits in length; however, some applications may have a shorter number. In addition to entering the correct applicant/candidate ID number, you must also meet the following criteria:
- Have an active application with the Board. If you have not sat for one or more of the required exams within the last two (2) years, you may be considered inactive, and you may be required to submit a new application to the Board.
- Have fulfilled the fingerprinting requirement. If you have not met the fingerprinting requirement, visit the Fingerprinting FAQs for detailed information and instructions.
- Have passed the Laws and Rules Exam (Take Home Exam).
- Enter your correct Date of Birth (DOB) when prompted.
Follow all instructions in BPELSG Connect to complete the Re-Exam Request and make a payment. After payment, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) notice via email with instructions on how and when to schedule your exam(s). Contact the Board if you do not receive your ATT(s) after payment is made.
If you believe you are eligible, but you are not able to submit a Re-Exam Request in BPELSG Connect, you may contact the Board for assistance.
Subsequent Re-Exam Requests in Connect
After submitting your first Re-Exam Request in Connect, to submit any subsequent requests for the same license type, you will no longer use the “Re-Exam Request” button. Instead, click the “Request Exam” link listed under the “Action” column of the Re-Exam application already listed on your dashboard. Follow all instructions in BPELSG Connect to complete the request and make a payment. After payment, you will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) notice via email with instructions on how and when to schedule your exam(s). Contact the Board if you do not receive your ATT(s) after payment is made.
Please be aware that you will not be able to submit a request to retake an exam until you have received your exam results.
Retaking the Geotechnical Engineer, Traffic Engineer, or State-Specific Geologist/Geophysicist Exams (CSE, CEG, CHG, or PGP)
If you need to retake the Geotechnical Engineer, Traffic Engineer, or the state-specific Geologist/Geophysicist exams (CSE, CEG, CHG, or PGP) you need to submit the appropriate Re-Exam Application form (listed below) and exam fee(s) to the Board via mail prior to being authorized by the Board to schedule to retake the exam(s). If you were never approved to sit for an exam, you are not eligible to use a Re-Exam Application form; you are considered a new applicant and must meet the requirements for new applicants (please view the Applicants page for further information). The Re-Exam Application form must be typed and printed (handwritten forms are not accepted) and signed in ink by hand (electronic or digital signatures are not accepted). If you did not submit fingerprints with a prior application to the Board, you must submit fingerprints before the Board can process your Re-Exam Application form (view the Fingerprinting FAQs for further information). Applicants are encouraged to submit the Re-Exam Application form as soon as they receive their exam results indicating a failed result, but do not submit a Re-Exam Application form to the Board before you have received your exam results.
Retaking the ASBOG Fundamentals of Geology (FG) and/or Practice of Geology (PG) Exams
Beginning Spring 2023 exam cycle applicants previously approved to take the ASBOG FG and/or PG exam(s) do not need to submit a Re-Exam Application to the Board or contact the Board in any way to retake the exam(s) that they were previously approved for. Applicants will pay exam fees directly to ASBOG and sign up for the exam(s) through ASBOG upon notification from ASBOG. It is anticipated that applicants will be able to sign up for the exam(s) directly through ASBOG in February of 2023. If you are a Professional Geologist (PG) applicant retaking the California Specific Exam (CSE), see the instructions above. Please check back, as additional information will be posted on the Board’s website as information becomes available.
