Re-Examination Information

Retaking an NCEES Exam
If you need to retake an NCEES exam, you do not need to submit a Re-Exam Application to the Board or notify the Board that you need to retake the NCEES exam. You must register with NCEES to retake the exam in accordance with NCEES registration policies. To register with NCEES, log in to your MyNCEES account.

Retaking the State-Specific Civil Engineer Exams, State-Specific Professional Land Surveyor Exam, or the Professional Geologist California Specific Exam (CSE)
If you need to retake the state-specific Civil Engineer exams, state-specific Professional Land Surveyor exam, or the Professional Geologist California Specific exam (CSE) you must use the online BPELSG Connect portal to submit the request and pay the exam fee(s) prior to receiving an Authorization to Test (ATT) notice.  Review the applicable submittal instructions below.

Legacy Applicants Initial Exam Registration in BPELSG Connect:

These instructions apply to applicants that did not submit their initial application in BPELSG Connect and have never submitted a request to take an exam in BPELSG Connect.  If you submitted your initial application in BPELSG Connect and/or in the past have requested to take an exam in BPELSG Connect, please skip to the instructions below in the next section titled “Exam Requests in BPELSG Connect”.

You will use the “Re-Exam Request” button on your user dashboard to start the process.  In order to successfully submit the request, you must enter your correct Board applicant/candidate ID number (this is a Board specific number; not your NCEES ID number).  Please refer to prior correspondence from the Board before calling the Board to obtain the ID number.  The ID number can be found on your prior exam results and is typically five (5) to six (6) digits in length; however, some applicants may have a shorter number.  In addition to entering the correct applicant/candidate ID number, you must also meet the following criteria:

  • Have an active application with the Board.  If you have not sat for one or more of the required exams within the last two (2) years, you may be considered inactive, and you may be required to submit a new application to the Board.
  • Have fulfilled the fingerprinting requirement.  If you have not met the fingerprinting requirement, visit the Fingerprinting FAQs for detailed information and instructions.
  • Civil Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor applicants must have passed the Laws and Rules Exam (Take Home Exam).
  • Enter your correct Date of Birth (DOB) when prompted.

Please be advised that you will not see your initial application on your dashboard; you will only see your state-specific exam eligibility after you submit the Re-Exam Request.

Follow all instructions in BPELSG Connect to complete the request and make a payment.  After payment, you will receive Authorization to Test (ATT) notice(s) via email with instructions on how and when to schedule your exam(s).  Contact the Board if you do not receive your ATT(s) after payment is made.

If you believe you are eligible, but you are not able to submit a request in BPELSG Connect, you may contact the Board for assistance.
