Notice of New Law Affecting Permit Approval for Restaurant Tenant Improvements

As part of the rebuilding efforts following the Los Angeles fires in January 2025, new legislation was enacted to streamline the permit approval process for restaurant tenant improvements.  Local building departments now must, upon request and at the expense of the permit applicant, allow a qualified professional certifier—defined as a licensed architect or engineer who meets specified requirements—to certify that the plans and specifications for the tenant improvement comply with all applicable building, health, and safety codes.

The new law establishes that making a false statement in a certification constitutes grounds for disciplinary action. Business and Professions Code section 6775 has been amended accordingly.

Notice of New Requirement for Records of Survey

Business and Professions Code section 8764.5 has been amended to require additional information on a record of survey. Specifically, the law now mandates that a date field be included next to the signature line in the “Surveyor’s Statement” section of the record of survey.
